1.0 Essay Choice

2. Who are some Malaysian cultural icons that have found success at an international level? Did nationality and/or local culture contribute to their achievements?

The icons that come into my mind immediately are Red Hong Yi, Jimmy Choo & Melinda Looi.
Nationality and local culture have influenced Melinda Looi's work. One of her brand 'emel by Melinda Looi’ is a fashion initiative that offers an annual Raya ready-to-wear collection. This initiative has seen celebrity collaboration such as 'Diana Amir x emel' and 'Diana Danielle x emel'.

As for Red, she was inspired by China's production power and abundance of materials found in wholesale markets when she was working in Shanghai so I would not say local culture contributed a lot to her achievements. Although she was invited to present her work, 'Teh Tarik Man' that reflects both physically and symbolically the culture of Malaysia made of 20,000 dyed teabags during Malaysian Night at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, I would say that it is her talent that precedes. Her nationality probably only enhances her character and popularity among Malaysians and fans worldwide.

3. Examine and discuss how communications technology or multilingualism was used in the narrative of a highly acclaimed movie.

Communications technology:
Perhaps I can explore how and why human envisions, fantasize or predict future communications technology to be like through movies.

Multilingualism:
  • Conlang and multiligualism in films?
  • How multilingualism can bring different sensation to audience?
  • Subtitle translation

Question 3 sounds more interesting to me, I think I will go for question 3.
